Welcome to “Chloe’s Fun Drink of the Day”, a series where I show you easy and fun drink recipe you can easily make at home! Ever since starting my new 9-5 that is mostly “work-from-home” days, I have found that these fun drinks have made me feel so much more productive!

This is my Oolong Grapefruit Ice Team and it is one of my all-time-favourite fruit tea combos. The oolong is silky smooth with a strong earthy taste that pairs perfectly with the tart and slightly bitter grapefruit.

I’ve loved this so much that I have started batch prepping it for the week so I can have a glass whenever I want (I’ve included how I do this under the recipe). Also if you are a fan of bubble tea fruit teas, this will be right up your ally.

Yield: 2 servings

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6g Loose Whole Leaf Oolong Tea (or any other form of oolong tea – you can even buy pre-brewed bottles at shops)
  • 600ml Water, room temp
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 1-2tbsp Honey (sub with simple syrup or other types of sweetener that won’t over power the tea and grapefruit flavours
  • Ice
a wedge of grapefruit on a iced tea

STEPS:

  1. You can either cold brew or hot brew the oolong tea. Cold brew gives you a gentler tea flavour that is a bit sweeter and in general more delicate. The hot brew gives a more intense oolong flavour. Both methods tastes delicious so you can’t go wrong:
    • COLD BREW: Add whole loose tea leaves into water and give it a gentle stir. Pop this into the fridge for at least 8hrs and max 24hrs, I highly recommend leaving it overnight. TIP: When it’s done cold-brewing you can strain out the leaves and brew it once again in hot water to allow the leaves to fully open up
    • HOT BREW: Pour hot water over the leaves and allow it to seep for 5-8min or the recommended time on the packaging. Add it to a lot of ice to quickly cool it down before adding it into this drink
  2. Slice grapefruit in half. For an optional garnish, cut 2 small wedges and set it aside. Juice the whole grapefruit and I recommend keeping the pulp
  3. Add 1tbsp of honey to the grapefruit juice and stir until dissolved. Give it a taste to assess the sweetness, if needed, add more honey
  4. Divide the grapefruit juice into 2 glasses then add a generous amount of ice and the garnish
  5. Pour 300ml of oolong tea into each glass
  6. Add a straw, give it a stir, and enjoy!

HOW TO BATCH PREP

I have an IKEA water jug that holds 1000ml of water so I always make my cold brews in there. I would add 10g of oolong tea to the 1000ml water (1g for every 100ml water) and leave that in the fridge to steep. This will make around 3 servings of the drink.

I like to start with 3 grapefruits and juice them all at once, then add 3-4 tbsps of honey and whisk everything together. Trust me, use a big bowl and a whisk to make this processes faster. I simply store the grapefruit juice in jars and leave them in the fridge for when I would like a drink during my day!

When there’s no more tea left, you will notice that the cold brewed tea leaves are still curled up. I like to then top the jug up with hot water to brew another batch of tea. I will immediately place it into the fridge so that the hot tea cools faster than normal so that the tea doesn’t develop an overwhelming bitter taste.
